A Heartfelt Evening of Inspiring Music and Community Spirit at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali
Nusa Dua, Bali, 27 August 2012… The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali takes great pleasure to announce that its annual UNICEF Check Out For Children Challenge charity event on Friday, 24th August 2012 was an overwhelming success. Internationally acclaimed Indonesian violinist, Iskandar Widjaya, took to the stage at the Bali International Convention Centre and delighted the audience with his musical expertise.
German born Iskandar Widjaja is a child prodigy who started playing the violin at the tender age of four. He was formally educated at Berlin’s finest institute for gifted musicians. In recent years he has performed as a soloist and chamber musician with esteemed orchestras in renowned venues across Europe. Iskandar is blessed with a rare talent that unites people of any age and nationality through the power of music.
Be The Change, Be The Inspiration – An Evening With Iskandar Widjaya was a moving concert that touched the hearts of many. The proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated directly to UNICEF and channelled to a project that vaccinates and educates impoverished children across the Asia Pacific region.
Apart from raising funds for an extremely worthy cause, the main aim of this event was to empower local children and help them realise their full potential. Prior to the concert Iskandar hosted an exclusive Sharing Session for aspiring young musicians and music lovers alike. It was an opportunity to meet Iskandar in person and bond over a mutual passion for the violin. He also took the time to pose for group photos and sign copies of his debut CD entitled “Bach ‘n’ Blues”.
The concert was essentially a celebration for children from all walks of life and complimentary tickets were provided for several Balinese schools. The audience was filled with youngsters from a nearby special needs institute sitting alongside the island’s top-ranking students and promising musicians. The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali also bussed in a group of children from an orphanage that it currently supports in north Bali. Other seats were allocated for sponsors, residents, members of the expatriate community and Bali’s travel industry.
A UNICEF video presentation was shown as a prelude to the concert highlighting children in the developing world. Iskandar Wijaya was then welcomed to the stage where he expressed his love of music by the German composer Bach declaring it one of the greatest gifts from God. He proceeded to introduce the genre of classical music by playing two moving compositions that resonated throughout the Nusa Indah Hall.
Other notable highlights during the show included a heartfelt violin rendition of “You Raise Me Up” by a group of local music students. They were later accompanied by Iskandar who took this tune to emotional new heights. He also collaborated with the children of the Joyful Choir to perform two popular songs, “We Are The World” and “The Greatest Love Of All”.
Iskandar concluded the concert with a stirring interpretation of three modern compositions, which resulted in a standing ovation. All of the evening’s young performers were then invited back to the stage for a final round of applause where Iskandar was presented with a bouquet of tropical flowers.
“It was indeed an honour to have a great musical talent such as Iskandar Wijaya play at the resort in support of our annual fundraiser. This event not only introduced classical violin music to the island of Bali but was also about nurturing the abilities of local children. I am happy to announce that this year we will be able to make a significant contribution to UNICEF and bring hope to those in need. I also have to draw attention to our dedicated team of associates and their fine efforts in rising to the challenge and making everything come together on the night,” comments Mr. Bipan Kapur, Managing Director of The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali.
